October 2009 Vol. 4 No. 10

The New Resources Keep on Coming – 65 More!

Message from Nancy Collins, PhD, RD, LD/N, FAPWCA

As a Floridian, I don’t have the opportunity to experience the fall weather so I was thrilled to be in chilly Denver for the American Dietetic Association’s Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE). I loved the refreshing cool air! It was wonderful to meet so many RD411.com users and hear all your positive feedback. It is truly gratifying to know that the site is accomplishing its goal of helping you streamline your workday and save you time. I am proud to announce that RD411.com received the 2009 Circle Award in Denver. The Circle Award is one of the highest honors the Dietitians in Health Care Communities (DHCC) dietetic practice group can grant. This award seeks to honor an individual or organization that has provided outstanding or unique support for the consultant dietitian. I sincerely appreciate DHCC for bestowing this honor on RD411. com. It truly touched my heart.

We have over 65 new resources this month. Our list of contributors is beginning to read like the Who’s Who of dietetics and nutrition! Many thanks to Evelyn Tribole, Linda Handy, Shawna Gornick-Ilagan, Elaine Koontz, Stacia Helfand, Georgia Humphreys, Elyse Resch, Liz Friedrich, and Judy Doherty for their submissions. They have all contributed very useful and informative documents for you to utilize in your practice. The list of new items is below. In addition, we have some very special offers only for RD411.com users so keep reading for discounts, coupons, free samples, a new free teleconference series, and a new self study course. As always, I love to hear your comments and feedback. Please email me at Nancy@RD411.com.

Do Your Patients Love Pasta? Get a Free Sample of Dreamfields Pasta

Do you often hear your patients say they love pasta, but avoid it because they’re watching their carbs or have diabetes? Hi, I'm Joan Williams, registered dietitian. I recommend telling your patients about Dreamfields Pasta. With only 5 grams of digestible carbs per one cup cooked serving, Dreamfields is the perfect pasta option. Plus, it has the same taste and texture of traditional pasta, so kids love it too.  Encourage your patients to look for the black box in the pasta aisle and have them make the healthy switch to Dreamfields.  RD411.com users can get a free sample kit so you can taste it and see for yourself. Just click here and a free kit will be shipped to you.

New Free CEU Course on the Omics of Nutrition

Genomics, metabolomics and related research—affectionately regarded as the “-omics” sciences, is a 30-year old metamorphosis that has emerged as the new face of nutrition and health. Nutrigenomics refers to the role of nutrients in gene expression. On the other hand, nutrigenetics takes a more systemic approach, describing an individual’s response to diet due to genetic variants or polymorphisms. Nutrition science is moving towards nutrigenomics and nutrigenetics to understand the relationship among dietary components, genetic polymorphism, and cellular metabolism. This FREE 1 CEU course will help you learn more. Click here to download the course and information on obtaining your credit.

RD411 Book Shelf

Each month Dr. Collins highlights one book she recommends.

This month’s recommended book is entitled The Secret to Skinny: How Salt Makes You Fat and the 4-Week Plan to Drop a Size and Get Healthier with Low-Sodium Swaps by Tammy Lakatos Shames, RD and Lyssie Lakatos, RD. You may have seen the Nutrition Twins on Good Morning America, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, the Doctors, QVC shopping network or dozens of other places. Now they have a new book that shows people how to swap out salt saboteurs for foods that will keep them satisfied and slim. For years, salt has hid under the radar screen when it came to weight loss. It was believed that salt could cause problems if it was raising blood pressure but it wasn’t connected with weight as much. According to the Nutrition Twins, research shows that high salt diets are associated with more fat cells in the body; what's more, salt causes fat cells to become denser. To read more about the salt and weight connection and to learn their simple plan, check out their new book. Visit www.nutritiontwins.com for more information on this amazing dynamic duo!
