March 2009 Vol. 4 No. 3

Happy National Nutrition Month!

Message from Nancy Collins, PhD, RD, LD/N, FAPWCA

In honor of National Nutrition Month, I am happy to bring you two new resources especially for dietitians. The first one explains what all those letters after your name mean. This two page handout describes the requirements for the more popular credentials including RD, DTR, CNSD, CDE, and more. Click here to download the PDF; please allow it a minute to download since it is graphically intense. Many of you ask me what the letters FAPWCA mean after my own name. It stands for Fellow of the American Professional Wound Care Association. Wound care is my clinical specialty and I am proud to have been granted fellow status from this prestigious organization. If you are interested in wound care, consider joining APWCA; you can find more information at www.apwca.org.

The second new item is a continuing education course entitled 5 Ways to Be a Better Dietitian. Skelly Publishing is offering 2 FREE CPEs to RD411.com users. Simply click here to learn some new tricks of the trade while earning 2 FREE CPEs! Also, for a limited time, Skelly Publishing, an accredited provider of CPEs for RDs and DTRs, is offering 20% off any purchase just for RD411.com users. Visit http://www.skellypublishing.com and use coupon code RD20 at checkout.

As always, I love to hear your comments and feedback. Please email me at Nancy@RD411.com.

New Spring Issue of Nutrition411 Marketing Newsletter Available

Last month, I told you about a new resource that would be ideal for private practice dietitians, entrepreneurs, out-patient dietitians and anyone trying to market their facility, business or practice. I am thrilled that so many of you took advantage of this brand new marketing service designed to help you build your own brand. If you are like many of my friends, you may have developed an extensive mailing list over the years but simply don’t have the time to design slick marketing products to keep your name in front of your target audience. RD411.com now offers bi-monthly four-page newsletters that you can use to stay in touch with your own clients and patients. Each newsletter contains timely topics, covering various aspects of nutrition, health, exercise, and well-being. The content meets the same high standards that RD411.com demands, and is peer reviewed and referenced, where applicable.  You can download the file and then send it to your own mailing list or you can bring the file to your local print shop if you prefer paper copies. You can even personalize the newsletter with your contact information. Click here to see the new Spring issue and learn more about this new service.

Still Time to Attend the Final Two Free Teleconferences on F325

If you work in long-term care, you are familiar with federal regulation F325. This recently revised regulation details the requirements for nutrition services and therapeutic diets in long-term care facilities.  You are invited to participate in a free teleconference that will discuss the regulatory requirements of F325. Click here for more information on how to register.  There is no charge but you must register in order to receive the dial-in information and handouts.

RD411 Book Shelf

Each month Dr. Collins will highlight one book she recommends.

This month’s recommendation is entitled Recipes for Life After Weight-Loss Surgery: Delicious Dishes for Nourishing the New You by Margaret Furtado, MS, RD, LD/N and Lynette Schultz, LRCP, RT. While this 240 page book was written for patients who have undergone bariatric surgery, the recipes are great for anyone who wants to maintain a healthy lifestyle. As more and more patients undergo weight loss surgery, it is important that they have a comprehensive resource to rely on. The first section of the book explains early post-operative nutrition guidelines, followed by hundreds of recipes with nutritional analysis and many full color photos. Contact the author at mfurtad2@jhmi.edu or visit www.amazon.com to purchase a copy.

Free Pasta Sample Kit for RD411.com Users!

Can a great tasting pasta have a low glycemic index? Dreamfields Pasta contains only 5 grams of digestible carbs and has 5 grams of fiber.  Like other premium pastas, Dreamfields is made primarily with durum wheat semolina, which is why it has all of the flavor and texture of traditional pasta.  RD411.com users can get a free sample kit so you can taste it and see for yourself. Just click here and a free kit will be mailed to you via the US Mail.

New Web Site for Students

All Access Internships is a website intended to serve as an information source and community outlet for aspiring dietitians. Founded by dietetic students Katie Hamm and Jenny Westerkamp, the site addresses the needs of the dietetic student community by offering an online collection of internship information, providing organizational tools for a personalized application process, and creating a social network where dietetic students and interns can share their experiences with others. Highlighted features include student testimonials, electronic note-taking, personalized application checklists, and an "all access pass" to resources and links on dietetic internships. Serious Advice from Dr. Collins

I am so glad that many of you have taken my advice and purchased a Clickfree automatic backup drive.  Read my personal story about the fire in my office and you will see how I discovered this amazing product!  I am sure you will rest easier knowing your files are safe.  If you have not yet taken steps to protect your electronic files, I am happy to announce that I have been able to get our discount offer extended until March 31, 2009.  RD411 users can get a 15% discount and free shipping by entering coupon code cfr331.  If you don’t routinely back up your computer, you are at risk for losing your files. I have found the simplest back up system ever called the Clickfree Automatic Backup. You don’t need any computer knowledge because all you have to do is plug it into your USB port.  Then sit back and watch it make a copy of all your documents, photos, slide sets, and other important files
