RD411.com Keeps On Growing!
Message from Nancy Collins, PhD, RD, LD/N, FAPWCA
I am so happy to announce that I was selected as the Entrepreneur of the Year by the Nutrition Entrepreneurs Dietetic Practice Group (DPG). This award means so much to me. I remember starting out over twenty years ago and all the changes that have transpired since then. I recall sitting in my diet therapy class in 1989. The instructor told us about a dietetics “rule” that required all newly registered dietitians (RDs) to work in a hospital for at least two years upon graduation. I had never heard of this rule before and was unnerved by it because I never envisioned myself working as a hospital dietitian. I asked my other instructors and they all agreed that the norm was for new graduates to seek employment only in a hospital setting. I didn’t have anything against hospital work per se and had even enjoyed my internship in a hospital very much but I knew I was not a 9 – 5 personality; besides, I had always dreamed of running my own business and loved long-term care. I took my chances and the very first day after graduation, I opened my own consulting business. As they say, the rest is history. It has been a wonderfully challenging, winding road with ups and downs, and wins and losses but overall, it was the right choice for me. To be recognized for having the entrepreneurial spirit is truly touching and just makes me want to start another business! Yes, I already have one planned out. I know; I am crazy. Sincere thanks to the NE DPG for this amazing honor.
Speaking of crazy, the new features are just about ready to launch. We have been testing and retesting trying to work out the kinks but there have been a lot of kinks. In just a few short weeks, you will be able to start your own blog, chat in the forums, post your videos or podcasts, develop a listing in the professional directory, and search for jobs. Oh, and I still have over 100 new resources ready to post, many of which are based on your requests.
As always, I love to hear your comments and feedback. Please email me at Nancy@RD411.com.

Focus on Fats
How many of your patients need help figuring out which fats promote health, what those health benefits are and which fats are unhealthy? Filippo Berio Olive Oil is full of good fats—over 75% are monounsaturated fatty acids.
Plus Filippo Berio Olive Oil contains no trans fats and is lower in saturated fat (SF) than other fats, like butter. The fats in olive oil help lessen the risk of heart disease, reduce cholesterol when substituted for other SFs, and may control blood sugar levels. RD411 Book Shelf
Each month Dr. Collins highlights one book she recommends.
This month I have a movie to recommend instead of a book. If you have not yet seen the movie Food, Inc. it is well worth your time. This movie reveals hidden truths about our nation’s food supply that will surely make you stop and think about the food you are putting on your own dinner table. As nutrition and health professionals, we try to influence patients and clients to make better food choices yet we often fail. Why is that? This movie lifts the veil on what is happening to our food supply as gigantic corporations, powerless farmers, and lax, overburdened regulatory agencies clash. As the movie affirms, we vote every time we purchase a food item. Perhaps after seeing this movie, you will see we have the power to turn the tables. Momentum grows for nutritionDay in the U.S.
The first annual nutritionDay in the U.S. is planned for November 5, 2009. This event is the first annual single-day audit aimed at improving patient care and helping to reduce healthcare costs by documenting patient nourishment (and related outcomes) in hospitals across the country. In addition to RD411.com, official partners for the event include ASPEN and ESPEN (European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition), and SCCM (Society for Critical Care Medicine). The U.S. event is patterned after ongoing nutritionDay in Europe audits which, in 2008, involved more than 45,000 patients in nearly 1600 units in 30 countries. Each participating U.S. hospital will receive a report showing the current status of its unit compared with the same specialty in all participating units. Subsequent nutritionDay studies will enable participants to identify successes resulting from improvements made. Don’t miss the opportunity to participate in this important November 5th benchmarking initiative! If you haven’t already, register your facility now. Contact nutritionDay in the U.S. National Project Coordinator Gail Gewirtz, MS, RD at nutritiondayus@ymail.com or 847-254-2034.

Medical Nutritional Therapy Products—A Solution
Patients frequently ask where they can purchase the same medical nutritional products they were given in their health care facility. When patients leave the hospital, nursing home or rehab facility they need access to the same quality and selection of products so they can continue their recovery at home with all the tools available. Many suppliers require full case purchases and have unrealistic minimum orders making it difficult for patients to place an order for home use or even for small facilities to stock a variety of products. 4WebMed offers nationwide home delivery of specialized nutritional products. Their flexible program provides patients with the ability to order frozen and shelf-stable products in reasonable quantities. 4WebMed also allows purchasers to break cases and mix flavors. They have specialized products from most major manufacturers to address a wide range of medical conditions including stroke, cancer, gastric bypass, diabetes and dialysis. 4WebMed is family owned and operated and is celebrating their tenth year of helping people find the right nutritional supplements for their healthcare needs.
