February 2010 Vol. 5 No. 2

Webinars, Free CEs, New Resources, Product Samples, and More!

Message from Nancy Collins, PhD, RD, LD/N, FAPWCA

This month I thought I would answer a personal question that I am frequently asked. Many people are curious to know if RD411.com is my full time job. It is not. I have a full time job and RD411.com is my night job! I have been working in wound care since 1993 specializing in the nutritional treatment of pressure ulcers and non-healing wounds. I focus on educating health care professionals about wounds and how they can improve medical outcomes for patients with wounds. This expertise has led me to a second specialty in litigation. I have served as an expert witness in over 450 medical malpractice and wrongful death suits involving the interwoven issues of nutrition, wounds, body weight and the applicable standard of care. Each month, I write a column for the journal Ostomy-Wound Management on these topics, so if you are also interested in wounds, please visit www.o-wm.com and look for my column. If you want to read my personal blog, see some of my favorite published articles, or just learn more about what I do besides managing RD411.com, please visit my web site at www.drnancycollins.com.

I am happy to announce several new offers and dozens of new resources for you this month. Please keep reading to find out how to receive 144 free SOYJOY® bars, how to earn one free CE credit on vitamin D, how to register for a new nutrition and wound healing webinar I am presenting, and how to access a new 5-day menu planner from Cabot Creamery. And of course, we have all the links to the new handouts, slides, and materials at the end of the newsletter. As always, I hope you find something you can use to streamline your work day so you can spend some extra time with your patients. Please contact me at Nancy@RD411.com with any comments or new ideas.

RD411 Book Shelf

Each month Dr. Collins highlights one book she recommends.

This month’s book selection is entitled Nutrition at Your Fingertips by Elisa Zied, MS, RD, CDN. The back of this book sums up the reason I like it for consumers: There is a lot to know about nutrition but you don’t need to know it all at once. Nutrition at Your Fingertips lets readers pinpoint the information they want quickly and easily using a flip-and-find format. Many people simply don’t have the time to read an entire nutrition book but this book encourages browsing because of the way the chapters are organized and labeled. I imagine this book is not one that will be put away on a shelf; it will be on the table or counter and used regularly each time a thought or question pops up. Just reach for the book and quickly find the facts. As Elisa says “Time is money. Spend wisely.” This book is both time and money well spent for consumers as well as health care professionals. For more information, visit www.nutritionatyourfingertips.com. Great job, Elisa!
